While in Great Smoky Mountain National Park, we took a day hike up a trail to Laurel Falls. This one is notable because the last time we took this particular hike, we were with all the Radomski cousins and Alex, Tess, and Luke were 3 years old and bounded up the hill with such gusto we were in fear that they would careen off the side of the mountain. So here we were, with another energetic 3 year old, making the same hike and wondering if this trail was such a good idea.
Somehow the Crews kids got into their heads that we were going to hike up to the waterfall and go swimming once we got there. They all wore bathing suits for the endeavor. At least the thought of a swim got them up the mountain without too many complaints. Once we got up to the spring-fed waterfall, however, they stripped down and got as far as sticking their big toes in the icy water. Then decided they'd rather stay dry. We enjoyed a well-earned snack by the waterfall before heading back down the trail. I'm glad to say Sophia made the trek (mostly) on her own, with minimal time spent on Daddy's shoulders. And despite my fears, she did not go careening off the side of the cliff, and we lived to tell the tale of another 3-yr-old hiker who earned her stripes on the Laurel Falls trail.
