My sis Amy and I devised a great plan for Alex this summer: spend a few weeks with her family as one of the Big Kids. Since the time we started having kids we have talked about doing summertime kid swaps once they got old enough. Her son Ryan spent a week with us the summer he turned 8. Alex is 8 and it was time to ship him off! So after his baseball season was (nearly) over and immediately after Jake, Julia and Ryan finished school, we all headed up to OH for a long weekend and met up with the Thomases at their lake house at Apple Valley Lake. The plan was to drop Alex off with them. He would go home to Cleveland with them for a week, then accompany them on their family vacation to Ft Walton Beach, FL, then we would pick him up as they drove home again since they had to pass through TN at some point.
Our time at the lake house was fabulous! The Thomases love to have fun just for fun's sake. They have a huge sling shot rigged up on the porch of their house aimed down toward their dock and the lake. All weekend we had water balloon wars. I pittied any poor fool who would wander down to the boat dock on her own, for that sap found herself the target of a water balloon storm!
Our days were filled wtih pomegranate martinis, homebrews, and Charlie's great cooking. We boated, swam off the dock, and shot some more water balloons. On the party boat we found out that Sophia has the need for speed. Anytime Charlie took us on a tour of the lake, she would hop over to the captain's seat and ask him, "Why are we going so SLOW?" Hurry it up, there, Uncle Charlie!
We had a great time and when it was time to say good-bye to my firstborn, I was very strong! I didn't even cry! Sophia was unphased and asked,"Can I sit in Alex's seat in the way-back?" So we set off for home one kid lighter and sent Alex off on his Big Kid adventure with his cousins.
